In this first issue of 2012, the Inclusive Design Research Group presents a new postgraduate course on “Inclusive Design and User Studies”.
The “Inclusive Design and User Research” module has been introduced to the postgraduate students at the College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University, Shanghai. This module is the first one in China, aiming to provide the knowledge base of inclusive design and a systematic approach to user research to Design postgraduates.
The module was delivered through 36-hour intensive teaching over a period of two weeks. It covers the following contents (with considerations of the students’ expectations)
l Introduction (definitions, origins and evolution of inclusive design, drivers for change and pioneers’ work)
l Case studies (consumer products, furniture, architecture, service design)
l Process+communication (demonstrating the inclusive design process in detail)
l Principles, preconceptions and the business case
l Understanding users (user models and user research methods)
l Conducting user research (practicalities, tools, ethics of working with people)
l Introduction to design exclusion
l Inclusive design in the context of China
l Inclusive design debate and a brief introduction to design research

4 | XU Yihong honored as Shanghai Top 10 Young Interior Designer
On December 15th, 2011, Associated Prof Xu Yihong from D&I got the honor of Shanghai Top 10 Young Interior Designer with No.1 score. The Sixth Shanghai Top 10 Young Interior Designer Selection were hold by The Spiritual Civilization Construction Office of Shanghai Government, Shanghai Communist Youth League, and Shanghai Decoration Design Association. The Award Ceremony will be hold at January 4th 2012, on the 2012 Shanghai Decoration Design Cultural Festival & Shanghai 5th Interior Designer Annual Meeting.
